The Lafayette Escadrille (Escadrille de Lafayette) was a squadron of the French Air Service during WW I named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, hero of the American Revolution. The squadron was composed largely of American volunteer pilots flying fighter aircraft emblazoned with a Sioux Indian. The squadron mascots were a pair of lions named Whiskey and Soda.
